Description

Venture into the unknown with Mistgate, a new third-party setting and rules expansion for the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons written and designed by Alkaemic. Mistgate is designed to captivate both seasoned players and newcomers alike, it offers a richly detailed world brimming with magic, technology, and ancient mysteries waiting to be unraveled.

Mistgate invites players to embark on an epic journey through the Guild Marches, where the remnants of a once-great civilization lie hidden amidst the ruins. Three millennia after the devastation of the Great Ruin, magic has returned to Theia, reigniting the dormant technology of a legendary era. Players will uncover magitech and other magical-augmented technology. In addition to your traditional sword-and-sorcery, players can equip their characters with firearms as they face new threats. Characters will find themselves facing creatures formed of pure darkness with ravenous appetites that feed on the life essence of others, called nightmares, well as machines left behind by the mysterious Heralds that continue to follow long-corrupted programs, the sentinels.

At the heart of this enigmatic setting in the center of the capital guild-city Dahncrest, lies the Mistgate itself, a relic of immense power that bridges the gap between Theia and the infinite expanse of the Mists beyond. With its discovery comes the promise of unparalleled adventure as players traverse the fractured realms of the Mist, each one ripe with its own perils and treasures.

"Mistgate represents a bold new direction and a stark contrast to the traditional settings available for Dungeons & Dragons," says Alkaemic's founder and Mistgate Lead Designer, Sean Quinn. "We've blended elements of science fiction and fantasy to create a world where players will encounter a seamless fusion of magic and technology."

Mistgate takes inspiration from multiple sources: most notably from European-inspired high fantasy and gothic settings as well as fantasy and science fiction as it is depicted in Japanese anime, manga, and video games. "I grew up with Dungeons & Dragons playing early Greyhawk adventure modules and reading Dragonlance novels. I collected adventures and books from just about every corner of the game. Alongside Dungeons & Dragons, I grew up playing Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and other JRPGs as well as watching anime and reading manga," Sean continues, "Record of Lodoss War, Berserk, One Piece, Square Enix's Final Fantasy series, and Bandai Namco's Tales of... series all have influenced me just as much as J.R.R. Tolkien, Margaret Weis, Tracey Hickman, et. al." He adds "I want to add my voice to those stories and deliver a world that others can love as much as I do."

Indeed, Mistgate challenges players to navigate a world where the boundaries between science and magic blur, shaping the destiny of nations and civilizations. From the bustling markets found throughout the guild-cities of the Midlands to the treacherous waters of the Shattered Coast, every corner of Theia teems with opportunity. And danger. Schisms, magical storms that form from high concentrations of aether can erupt at any given moment making travel through parts of the world treacherous. Not only do the schisms tear the fabric of space and time apart, but the realm on the otherside of a schism begins to superimpose itself. Left alone for too long, nightmares and other creatures will be attracted to the immense storm of magical energy. Adventurers, guilds, and the once-powerful Mistguard all take it upon themselves to defend the realms from these incursions.

For those brave enough to venture into the Mists, the rewards are beyond measure. Within these boundless realms lie untold wonders waiting to be unearthed, as well as ancient secrets that could reshape the fate of Theia itself.

Crowdfunding Campaign Details

Mistgate is targeting a goal of $50,000.00 USD, which will cover pre-crowdfunding art and business costs associated with the development of the property, and with the majority of funds following the campaign going toward additional artwork.

The crowdfunding campaign will feature a social game, the Ruins of Dalmura located in the heart of the Guild Marches in the mountains overlooking Dahncrest. Backers will have the opportunity to unlock additional class options, guilds, monsters, spells, and character options by following Alkaemic, and Lorecall on various social networks, subscribing to the Lorecall Youtube channel, and by submitting fan artwork inspired by the setting.

Alkaemic is focusing on delivering digital copies of the campaign setting and companion books, first. The Kickstarter campaign will also include rewards for a module to import into Roll20.

In addition to the digital content for Mistgate, there will be a special limited first edition printing of both the campaign setting and the companion book. While future printings are expected, the white-cover special edition for the Mistgate Campaign Setting book will only be available during this Kickstarter campaign.

Stretch goals will include additional virtual table top module options (Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, etc.), more adventures, expanded setting details, an opening comic, more art, prestige classes, high-end print add-ons for the limited edition print runs, and more.
