Mistgate Logo Reveal

Mistgate has been a passion project for a long time now, and although I always saw the potential in Mistgate as a product and a franchise the earliest development of the setting was explicitly approached as an effort in just building a shared world that our local group could consistently run our Dungeons & Dragons games in.

As Mistgate grew in size, complexity, and the richness of the stories in the setting began to take on a life of their own, the effort began to take on a new dimension.

Before we reveal the logo, what is Mistgate?

For those unfamiliar with Mistgate, and reading about it for the first time, Mistgate is a science fantasy setting that is debuting as a campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons, but additional media such as novels are also planned. Within Mistgate's storied history, monumental events have shaped its destiny, none more cataclysmic than the Great Ruin, an apocalyptic upheaval on a grand scale that scarred the very soul of the world and had rippled effects into the infinite expanse of the Mists beyond.

Typical fantasy elements such as magic are present alongside technology. The combination of the two forces forms the basis for magical technology known as "magitech" throughout the Known World.

In Mistgate, the mystical intertwines with the technological, forming a breathtaking union known as "magitech". In Mistgate, epic tales unfurl; nations clash and conflict begets the seeds of war, secrets—long entombed in ancient ruins—beckon to be unearthed, lost technologies yearn to be rediscovered, and the uncharted realms of the unknown entice adventurers to strike forth and uncover their mysteries. The stories told will challenge the very essence of the world of Mistgate and reveal truths long since forgotten.

Divided between two awe-inspiring domains, Mistgate reveals its duality. The world of Theia, scarred by the cataclysmic tides of time, stands as a testament to resilience. And then, there are the Mists, a mesmerizing multiverse of countless fragmented realms, whose ethereal essence seeps into Theia during turbulent storms known as schisms. Chaos reigns within these tempests, unpredictable and unyielding, fueled by raw, uncontrollable magical energy. Yet, through these arcane rifts, one might catch a glimpse the wonders of the Mists, though to travel to them via this path is treacherous and fraught with peril. The Mistgates and the ships that sail upon the Mist Sea prove to be safer and more reliable means of passages.

The Mistgate Logo

It is with great pleasure that I have the opportunity to reveal some of the art which has been produced for the project. Doing so makes the project feel more concrete and real. No longer does it feel like we're just playing at creating a world, but we've actually committed to it.

The first piece of art that we're revealing is the game's logo.

When work on Mistgate began, it was clear that Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) were a big influence on the ideas and aesthetics of the game setting. This has carried through not only some of the stories and themes, but also in the game's art. It can be clearly seen in the character artwork—which we will begin to reveal in upcoming weeks—as well as in the logo.

The Mistgate logo, below, was thoughtfully crafted by Jon Adrian Lopez Alafriz:

In the logo, you see some prominent elements: a mistgate, a tower, and a mountain.

In the logo, the mistgate is specifically an illustration of the Dahncrest mistgate. Dahncrest, as future articles will cover, is one of the largest cities in the Known World and is the heart of the Guild Marches. Dahncrest, as a city, has been rebuilt from the rubble and ruins of the past and is one of the more iconic locations of the setting.

The tower rising above the mountain in the logo is Citadel Tower; a towering structure left behind by an ancient civilization that survived the cataclysm. Located within the central district of Dahncrest, Citadel Tower is more than just a tower, it is a symbol. Below Citadel Tower and the rest of Dahncrest is a labyrinthine maze that continues descending in an almost improbable manner revealing ruins displaced by the explosion of magic in the cataclysm ages past.

Finally, the mountain beside the tower represents Mt. Herald to the west of Dahncrest, a small but important mountain range that provides access to vital resources, such as aetheryte, which the guilds use in their production of magitech arms and equipment.
